Lexus SLIDE and the Lexus Sport Yacht are two innovations from Lexus - one imagines how we might travel in the future, the other re-envisions the present. Both began in our imagination and both are cues to a world where our travels can take place beyond roads.
FROM VISION TO REALITY
The SLIDE project set Lexus out to push the boundaries of technology, design and innovation to make the impossible possible. The Lexus hoverboard was brought to life through Lexus’ passion for creating enjoyment out of motion, and showcases the brand’s creativity to realize amazing experiences.
TRUE TECHNICAL INNOVATION
The hoverboard is constructed from an insulated core, containing HTSLs (high temperature superconducting blocks). These are housed in cryostats - reservoirs of liquid nitrogen that cool the superconductors to -197°C.
The board is then placed above a track containing permanent magnets. When the board is cooled to its operating temperature the track’s magnetic flux lines are ‘pinned’ into place, maintaining the hover height of the board.
Weight with Magnets
and Liquid Nitrogen
The Lexus hoverboard’s form is informed by the same design principles shared by all Lexus products, and is a balance of considered craft, premium materials and true technical innovation.
Classic skateboarding influenced by the brand’s performance pedigree makes this project pure Lexus - exhilarating and inspiring.
Every part of SLIDE required masters of design, technology and skating to re-imagine their craft. Watch how this came together to create a whole new experience.
While Lexus’ hoverboard isn’t available to eager riders, performance Lexus travel on water soon will be...
Like most vehicles, the Lexus Sport Yacht began as a concept. The exterior lines gave it an aerodynamic shape and aggressively iconic demeanor. The interior styling and detail took everything you’d expect from the luxury brand, and reimagined it for comfort at sea.
The Lexus Design Center was challenged to develop a one-off, not-for-market open sports yacht. The 42-foot Lexus concept is powered by twin 440hp high-performance Lexus V8 engines, similar to those in Lexus’ high performance road vehicles, modified for marine use. It also features advanced styling and handling, intended for carrying six to eight guests on recreational day-tours.
A FUTURE LEXUS PREMIUM YACHT
In March 2018, this concept won a special award at the Japan International Boat Show where plans were announced to produce a future Lexus premium yacht for worldwide sale beginning in 2020.
Whether bringing the future to reality, or
re‑envisioning our brand at sea, Lexus
proves to be just as exhilarating off the
pavement as on it.
