2020 FINALIST
Coral
Designer: Hyunseok An (South Korea / Based in USA)

Algae play a critical role in the sustainability of our ecosystem. Algae are not only the most efficient scrubbers of airborne CO2 on the planet – with ten times greater CO2 fixation than terrestrial plants – they can also serve as food for a sustainable future. The 1974 UN World Food Conference deemed algae 'the most ideal food for mankind.'

Despite these advantages, we tend to dismiss algae, associating them with slime, sewage, and pond scum. Due to this perception, we might lose the potential benefits to our health and our environment.

Coral is the world’s first modular microalgae farming kit that enables individuals to grow food for a sustainable future in everyday life. This wall-mounted bioreactor offers a socially acceptable way of growing algae through its unique aesthetics and functionality. The modular system enables you to grow algae as simply as you grow potted basil. In addition, its ever-changing shades of green create a unique indoor experience acting as a living artistic piece, therefore, it changes people’s perceptions about microalgae.

Thus, Coral connects large-scale environmental issues to our daily lives. Through environmental contributions using Coral, individuals can take one more step toward making a real impact on climate change.
